2025 - 2026 BCSR Graduate Student Working Groups

August 28, 2025

The BCSR invites proposals for graduate student working groups focusing on a specific topic in the study of religion, such as ethnographic approaches to religion, African religion, or poetry and religion, etc. The purpose of the working groups is to offer graduate students of religion a supportive interdisciplinary community to share work, discuss readings, and meet religion scholars. Working groups should have the following criteria: (i) meet on a monthly basis and (ii) include at least 3 graduate students and (iii) have a designated coordinator who is a UCB graduate student. Working group funding will range from $1500-$4000. Groups may use funds to purchase books, snacks/food, speaker honorariums, and more. To apply, the designated coordinator must send a paragraph describing the working group’s topic of study, proposed activities, budget, and list of participants, to BCSR co-directors Carolyn Chen (chen@berkeley.edu) and Duncan MacRae (duncanmacrae@berkeley.edu) by Friday, September 26.

We encourage interested students to learn more and meet potential collaborators at the BCSR Graduate Student Welcome Reception on September 2, 5 pm, 440 Stephens HallRSVP by Thursday, August 28 via this Google Form
